Here's a random, quick, and not completely thought through anime take:
Okay, so I'm rewatching AoT (for like, at least the 8th time), and I'm on S3 Ep 15. If you forget which one that is, it's in the reclaiming of Wall Maria arc, and it begins with a flashback to the reclaiming of Trost arc showing us how Marco actually died. **Spoiler alert if you haven't seen it yet: He overhears Reiner and Bertholdt talking abt their titan forms, and they tackle him onto a roof/front door overhead, have Annie strip him of his ODM gear, and leave him there for a titan to eat.
Now, while I do blame Reiner, Annie, and I guess Bertholdt (though he didn't do much), I can't help but feel like Marco could've survived at least a bit longer. Why? Well, unless they broke his legs and the anime just skipped over that, I thought of a couple of ways off the top of my head:
Way 1 – the window: If he turned his head to the left, he would notice a window, which Annie threw his ODM gear through, which created a hole big enough for his arm to fit through and which very clearly had the ability to open. He could've easily put his arm through and opened the window from the inside and crawled in before the titan got to him OR if he didn't have enough time, he had boots, so just kick the window in and crawl through.
Way 2 – the door: He coulda just rolled his ass off the roof (yes, it's sorta high, but not THAT high) and kicked in the door or any nearby door.
Again, that is unless, of course, they broke his legs, and the anime just skipped over that part, but even then, the window is a valid option.

Bertholdt had never felt a kiss in his life, nor had he tried to imagine what it would feel like. In fact, the thought of it itself could change his normal state into a flustered mess. Yet although he had never bothered himself with those types of thoughts too much… He had questioned before. And… Well… Reiner had never been too far from the answer. So when his warm, masculine lips touched his, Bertholdt felt his heart flutter strangely. Were those the famous butterflies everyone was talking about? In any case, it felt good. Like all of his worries were pouring out of him. Leaving only relaxation. He closed his eyes, concentrating on the touch, the warmth, the scent of Reiner so close to him- to his own very soul. Him pressing on his skin, his fingers making circles on his face… It was like a promise; an oath that said everything would be okay. He could stay in that kiss for eternity. Bertholdt could feel himself start to float- It was incredible- And to think Reiner- The kiss stopped. Then came back, hungrier. His groan of surprise was muffled by Reiner’s body learning ever more into him; craving the sensation of heat, of steam erupting from their mouth. ooooh yes. This was amazing. The kiss stopped. Then came back, gentler. Bertholdt would fall in love in Reiner’s arms if only he gave the command to do so. For the first time in forever, he felt held; he felt perceived; he felt like he belonged somewhere.
